By default there's an error in the TaxonomyPicker.ascx file SharePoint 2010 that has even not been corrected yet in SharePoint 2010 Service Pack 1. You can easily fix it yourself. When you're getting the following error in the Event Viewer on your SharePoint 2010 system:

Load control template file /_controltemplates/TaxonomyPicker.ascx failed: Could not load type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.Portal.WebControls.TaxonomyPicker' from assembly 'Microsoft.SharePoint.Portal, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c'.

Follow these steps to fix the problem:

  1. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\TEMPLATE\CONTROLTEMPLATES
  2. Open the TaxonomyPicker.ascx file that resides in this directory using notepad
  3. The very first line looks like:

    <%@ Control className="TaxonomyPickerControl" Language="C#" Inherits="Microsoft.SharePoint.Portal.WebControls.TaxonomyPicker,Microsoft.SharePoint.Portal, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c" %>

The error is caused by the characters marked in bold and being underlined. Replace this line with:

    <%@ Control className=”TaxonomyPickerControl” Inherits=”Microsoft.SharePoint.Portal.WebControls.TaxonomyPicker, Microsoft.SharePoint.Portal, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c” %>

Save and close notepad. The problem should now no longer appear in the Event Viewer.
